SAN DIEGO -- The PLNU men's soccer team wrapped up non-conference play Tuesday with a 2-0 victory over Arizona Christian University.
Senior forward Tyler Hall gave the host Sea Lions a quick lead in the third minute with an unassisted goal off a deflection, while the defense shut down the visiting Firestorm's attack.
Freshman Erick Friessen padded the Sea Lions' lead in the 62nd minute with an unassisted goal of his own.
Overall, however, the Sea Lions were not satisfied with the way they played.
“We did what we needed to do, but the effort was less than their usual standard,” said Coach Tim Hall.
The team launched an absurd 32 shots during the match, 12 of which were on goal. The Firestorm, on the other hand, only managed to get off five shots. PLNU goalkeeper Keith Cline, a redshirt sophomore making his first start of the season, secured the Sea Lions' third straight shutout, easily stopping both shots on goal by ACU.
“A shutout is good. A win is good,” said Hall. “But…if they play like that today against any GSAC school, they won't win.”
The win brought the Sea Lions' record to 6-1-1 heading into play against the Golden State Athletic Conference. They open up conference play Oct. 1 against NAIA 6th-ranked Azusa Pacific University.
Despite what he thinks was a lackluster performance against ACU, Hall believes that his team is prepared for the challenges brought on by Azusa Pacific and the rest of the GSAC.
“I think Saturday they'll be ready to play,” said Hall. “Tactically, we will do what we've been doing all season. These guys are going to play well, so I feel good about [facing] Azusa. I think they feel good about wanting to play Azusa.”
The Sea Lions game at Azusa Pacific is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm. The women's game will follow at 3:30 pm.
