SAN DIEGO -- The Sea Lions' three-game winning streak came to a halt on Tuesday evening in Golden Gymnasium where Azusa Pacific University outscored Point Loma by just-shy-of 20 points in the teams' first conference match up of the year.
In the Cougars' 59-42 victory, the visitors nearly doubled the Sea Lions' rebound totals, 66 to 34. Those 66 boards included 33 on the offensive end, while Point had just seven—that alone could have been what sunk the team Tuesday.
"I don't think there is anyone on our team that would say they had a good game," said PLNU coach
Bill Westphal. "It might have been our worse effort all season. The rebound differential was indicative on how we played."
The rebounding wasn't the only problem for Coach Westphal's group. Azusa went to the line 33 times while the Sea Lions made it there just 10 times. Though Point Loma made 70 percent of its free throws, the sheer numbers for APU were just too much for the Sea Lions.
Brianna Colon led the hosts with 13 points and four rebounds.
Nyla Bailey contributed nine points and seven rebounds.
The Cougars' Amber Williams put up a huge 30 points and 19 rebounds while Madalene Barrett also had 19 boards. Amanda Sims recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebound. Brianna Hall also scored in double digits with 12.
13th-ranked Azusa Pacific is now 12-5 overall, 5-2 in the GSAC. PLNU drops to 12-7 overall, 3-4 in the GSAC.
“There isn't much good we can take from this one,” Westphal said. “The good thing is that it's just one game. We have to be ready for our next game and play a whole lot better.”
The Sea Lions' next game will be Saturday, Jan 21 at The Master's College at 5:30 pm.
