Sea Lions Stunned by SDCC

PLNU loses for only the third time ever to crosstown Hawks

box score

SAN DIEGO – The Point Loma Nazarene women's basketball team was beaten by crosstown rival San Diego Christian, 61-43 Tuesday night in Golden Gymnasium. The Sea Lions fell to 9-5 overall and are now 0-3 in Golden State Athletic Conference action. The upstart Hawks improved to 13-2, 2-1 GSAC.

The last time that San Diego Christian defeated PLNU was during the 1999-00 season – a span of 23 games. SDCC was Christian Heritage College at the time and Point Loma's mascot was the Crusader.

The first few minutes of the conference tilt was evenly played with the Sea Lions taking some early leads. Brianna Colon sank a three-pointer at 11:38 to give PLNU a 17-11 lead. But things would go downhill from there for the Green and Gold.

A jumper by Brittany Robinson and a trey from Hannah Miller pulled the Hawks to within one. Robinson then made two free throws to put SDCC on top – a lead that visitors would not relinquish the rest of the night.

PLNU trailed 32-26 at the half and would fall behind by double-figures following a Robinson trey a few minutes into the second stanza. The gap would reach 13 before the Sea Lions closed the gap to nine points at the midway point of the period. SDCC regained the advantage though, finishing strong and winning by 18.

Though both teams shot around the 40 percent mark, the Sea Lions were outhustled by the Hawks on the boards, 44-28. SDCC had a tremendous advantage in offensive rebounds (22-6), scoring 18 second-chance points.

PLNU also turned the ball over 23 times, which the Hawks converted into 18 points.

Nyla Bailey led the Sea Lions with 14 points and seven rebounds; Brianna Colon was next with 13 points. Crissa Jackson dished out five assists in the loss.

Robinson paced SDCC with 16 points with Jasmin Thomas adding 11. Both Daniel and Jermani Stewart scored eight points.

The Sea Lions will try to get back on track when they host CSU San Marcos this Thursday at 7 pm in a non-conference contest.
