EL CAJON, Calif. – Nyla Bailey had 30 points and 11 rebounds, and Crissa Jackson added 24 points to lead Point Loma Nazarene to a 70-61 conference win over San Diego Christian Tuesday night. The game was the third straight in which Bailey posted a double-double.
With the win PLNU improves to 14-9 overall, 5-6 in GSAC play and dropped the Hawks to 16-7, 5-6 conference. The triumph was a measure of revenge for Point Loma. The last time that these two teams met was in Golden Gymnasium on January 3 when the Hawks breezed past the Sea Lions 61-43.
"We did the necessary things to get the win tonight," said Bailey. "We rebounded, played good transition defense and made shots. It's good to play an opponent you played early in the year. San Diego Christian is a good team and this was a good win. I think we are only going to get better as a team."
San Diego Christian led by eight points nine minutes into Tuesday's contest but the Sea Lions would grab the momentum and be ahead by five after a Jackson three-pointer at 2:54. At half the score was 33-32, SDCC.
The first five minutes of the second half went back-and-forth. PLNU took control from that point on and after a 10-2 run led 49-41. The Sea Lion advantage swelled to double-figures at the eight-minute mark and was 16 points at 4:57.
San Diego Christian battled to the end and sliced the deficit to seven points when Brittany Robinson drained a trey at 1:17. With time running down the Hawks were forced to foul in an attempt to get the ball back.
Jackson ruined that strategy and preserved the win for the Sea Lions by making four free throws down the stretch.
PLNU made 13-17 free throws against the Hawks, with Jackson going 7-8 at the stripe. The Sea Lions shot the ball at a 52 percent clip Tuesday, though they made only 3-11 from long-range.
SDCC shot just 32 percent but stayed close by making eight three-pointers and forcing 21 Point Loma turnovers.
Kiley Berlinski had six points and seven assists in the win.
Hannah Miller paced the Hawks with 20 points with Robinson adding 11.
The Green and Gold returns home on Saturday where they will take on Fresno Pacific. Tip-off is slated for 2:30 pm.
