FRESNO, Calif. – Point Loma Nazarene trailed by 14 points but would rally and hang on late to defeat NAIA No. 24-ranked Fresno Pacific Saturday evening, 70-64. Marek Klassen and Hayden Lescault led the comeback, scoring 25 and 19 points respectively.
Klassen scored all 25 of his points in the second half, draining seven three-pointers while Lescault posted complete game numbers of seven rebounds, six assists and four steals to go with his 19 counters.
The rare road triumph at FPU pushes the Sea Lions' record to 9-4 overall and evens the team's Golden State Athletic Conference mark to 2-2. The last time that the Green and Gold prevailed in Fresno was February 28, 2004.
It looked like the Sea Lions were having another case of road woes when Saturday's game started. Fresno Pacific charged out in front by a score of 25-11 with just under six minutes remaining in the first half.
Things didn't look much better at the break. Though PLNU scored the last four points of the half, the team managed just 19 points over the opening 20 minutes and went into intermission trailing 30-19.
Klassen came out of the locker room and caught fire however, hitting the first of his treys with 14:18 left. But it was back-to-back treys from Lescault four minutes into the second period that really got the ball rolling for Point Loma.
Klassen followed with a jumper at 15:57 to cap what was a 15-point Sea Lion run that began late in the first half. That bucket closed the gap to just five points (35-30).
Minutes later, a three by Klassen at 11:48 gave the Sea Lions just their second lead of the game (43-42) – one that they would hold onto until the end. Point Loma eventually went up 11 points at the 7:18 mark and headed into the last minute of the game with a 10-point lead.
The Sunbirds (10-5, 1-3 GSAC) fought down to the last second, though. FPU hit a pair of free throws, made a layup and sank a three within a 30 second span to cut Point Loma's lead to just three points with 20 seconds to go.
Fortunately, PLNU showed its grit at the line to preserve the win. Both Greg Murray and Wil Bush made two free throws before another long-distance shot by the Sunbirds made the score 68-64, PLNU. Murray drained two from the stripe with two seconds to go to seal the victory. Murray finished the game with 10 points.
The Sea Lions wound up making 12 three-pointers out of 29 tries while FPU succeeded on just 4-of-21 from past the arc. PLNU also outscored the Sunbirds 51-34 over the final 20 minutes.
Point Loma has another road game before heading to Golden Gym for two. On Tuesday the Sea Lions will be in Fullerton to take on Hope International. Tip-off is at 7:30 pm.
