RIVERSIDE, Calif. - In a match that saw three lead changes and two ties, it was California Baptist that scored the final goal to earn a 3-2 win over the Point Loma women's soccer team in overtime on Tuesday, Oct. 30.
Chantel Cappuccilli broke the 2-2 tie with an unassisted goal nine minutes into the first overtime. She corralled a long pass and struck it into the net for the game-winning goal. The three goals were the most goals PLNU had allowed in a match all season.
The win helped CBU remain atop the Pacific West Conference standings with 36 points (13-2-1, 12-1-0 PacWest). The Sea Lions remained in fourth place in the PacWest with 25 points (11-4-1, 8-3-1 PacWest). The Lancers and Sea Lions split their two matches in 2012, with PLNU winning at home, 3-0.
The Sea Lions fought back from a 1-0 first-half deficit to build a 2-1 lead in the second period. CBU's first goal came on an own goal by Point Loma in the 37th minute. But
Kelly Christerson would not allow the Lancers' lead to stand long as she beat the goalie and scored on an unassisted goal in the 41st minute to knot the match at 1-1 going into the half.
The Kracy sisters would then connect in the 60th minute put the Sea Lions in front. Goal keeper
Tiffany Kracy, who had gone her entire career without a point, recorded an assist in her second consecutive match. She connected with her freshman sister Tara off a free kick and Tara headed the ball into the net for her third goal of the season.
California Baptist would get the equalizer in the 81st minute when its prolific goal scorer, Bernadette Witz, scored off a cross to send the match to overtime. This was Witz's 12th goal of the season.
Witz was an offensive force for the Lancers all afternoon. She took 13 shots, including seven shots on goal. She was one of four Lancers with at least five shots in the match as CBU outshot PLNU 33-10.
Tiffany Kracy made a season-best 13 saves in the match. Rosie Nakata had three saves for Cal Baptist.
The PLNU women's soccer team will face another road challenge on Thursday (Nov. 1) when they travel to Fresno Pacific for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
