SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma and Hawaii Pacific women's soccer teams battled to a 0-0 tie in a PacWest showdown on Saturday, Oct. 6.
The tie gives PLNU (7-2-1, 5-1-1 PacWest) another point in the PacWest standings. The Sea Lions now have 16 points in league play to lead Dixie State by one point (DSC will play Chaminade this evening). The tie was also the first of the season for the Sea Warriors. They now stand at 3-6-1 on the season and at 2-3-1 in conference play.
The match was played primarily on HPU's side of the field as PLNU controlled the ball for most of the match. However, the Sea Lions could not find the net. They outshot Hawaii Pacific 23-10, including 12-4 on shots on goal, but none slipped past the Sea Warriors' goalie.
"I feel horrible about a tie," said Point Loma head women's soccer coach
Tim Hall. "Our girls played incredibly well for the first 90 minutes. We did well in the back, in the middle and at the top but we just didn't pull the trigger to put the ball in the net. It's like missing layups; you have to put the ball in the net."
The Sea Lions had a number of shots graze the outside of the net or be deflected off target by HPU's goal keeper Kiana Kaiwi, who finished the match with 12 saves. One came right at the end of the second period when
Natalie Swift's last second shot was poked away by Kaiwi.
"I felt we played well but we didn't finish our chances," Hall added."When you let teams hang around the match turns into a fight. I felt we played well but didn't take care of our chances in the final third (of the match)."
Point Loma was never out of the contest thanks to a solid defense which is allowing just .4 goals per game. Senior
Tiffany Kracy once again anchored the Sea Lions' defense by making four saves and recording her fifth shutout of the season.
"The defense is very confident and disciplined in what they are doing," said Hall. "They are a solid group and I was happy with them today. When you are consistently in their half the only thing that will hurt you will be counters. Tiffany made some nice saves on the attacks they did have."
Coach Hall was also impressed with the energy and competitiveness displayed by HPU today.
"I feel like Hawaii Pacific is a good team and they do some things very well," said Hall.
The PLNU women's soccer team will now prepare to welcome in Hawaii-Hilo for a match on Monday (Oct. 8) at 3:30 p.m.
