NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Sea Lions got a glimpse of their future on Saturday, and that future is looking very bright. Freshman
Sam Okhotin came off the bench to score 15 points and fellow freshman
Arren Wells added a double-double to lead the Point Loma men's basketball team to a 61-51 road victory over Trevecca Nazarene.
The win gives PLNU a 1-1 record on their road trip to the south. It also dropped TNU to 1-1 on the season.
Okhotin checked into the game early in the first half and after missing his first shot he proceeded to hit his next six shots, including three from long range. He finished with 15 points. Wells also came off the bench and provided the Sea Lions with a strong inside presence. In addition to his 10 points Wells grabbed 11 rebounds, including four on the offensive glass and added two blocks. These two freshmen helped the PLNU bench outscore Trevecca's reserves 33-15. Senior
Todd Campbell also reached double-figures with 13 points as he went 5-of-8 from the field.
Point Loma was outstanding on defense for a second night in a row. They held the Trojans to 33 percent shooting in the game, including just 24 percent from 3-point range (4-of-17). The Sea Lions also outrebounded Trevecca 39-32.
PLNU never trailed in the game. The Sea Lions scored 14 of the first 18 points and took a 15-point lead into halftime (35-20). Point Loma would start hot in the second half too. It scored 12 of the first 19 points to extend their lead to 20 points with 13:36 remaining.
Trevecca would answer with an 18-2 run to cut the Sea Lions' lead to four points at the 5:45 mark. Campbell then answered by knocking down a 3-pointer to push the lead back to seven. The Trojans would not let that shot slow their momentum as they went on a 6-1 run to trim the lead to two points with 1:58 remaining. This was the closest the Trojans had been since the 15:14 mark in the first half.
It would then be the Sea Lions' defense and free throw shooting which would stop the run and propel them to the win. First it was
AJ Ussery getting to the line and hitting his first free throw to push the lead back to five. His would miss his second shot from the charity stripe but Wells grabbed the offensive rebound, kicked it out, got the pass right back from Ussery and scored a layup. The Trojans then started to play the foul game. They sent the Sea Lions to the line six times over the last minute, and PLNU knocked down five of their free throws for the final 10-point margin of victory. Trevecca was 0-for-6 from the field after cutting PLNU's lead to two points.
The Point Loma men's basketball team will now return home to prepare to host Northwest Nazarene in its Homecoming game on Nov. 17th. The men's game will follow the women's game which is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
