Kloppenburg, Campbell lead PLNU over Toros

[Box score]

LOS ANGELES - Carlotta Kloppenburg scored 18 points and Andrea Campbell added a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Point Loma women's basketball team to a 70-43 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills at the CSULA Thanksgiving Classic (Nov. 23).

The Sea Lions have now opened their season with back-to-back victories (2-0). The loss drops the Toros to 0-3 on the season.

Campbell came off the bench to record career-highs in points and rebounds en route to her first career double-double. Her efforts on the glass helped PLNU outrebound CSUDH 58-46 and outscore them 13-6 on second chance points.

The 18 points for Kloppenburg was also a career-high along with her four 3-pointers. The junior transfer guard from Lassen, Calif. and Ventura JC, added a team-best three steals to go along with six rebounds. Nyla Bailey chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds. Abby Boorman also added six points to go along with her nine boards.

"We have lots of people on this team that can score," said senior forward Andrea Campbell. "We have lots of potential and are continuing to work together to improve."

Kloppenburg hit a 3-pointer three seconds into the game and the Sea Lions would never trail. The Toros would earn their only tie at the 7-7 mark but PLNU answered with a 10-0 run and CSUDH would never get closer than seven points the rest of the way. Point Loma would build its lead to as many as 13 in the first half and take a 31-20 lead into the locker room.

PLNU would then put the game away with a 12-0 run to open the second half to go on top 43-20. The Sea Lions would build their lead to as many as 27 at the 8:41 mark on a jumper by Boorman. Campbell scored the final four points of the game to get her double-double.

"We did better in the second half," said Carlotta Kloppenburg. "We are trying to adjust to new things and take them from practice into the games. We have lots of work to do but we have a good team chemistry and look forward to playing more games together."

The Sea Lions will continue play in the CSULA Thanksgiving Classic tomorrow (Nov. 24) when they take on the host, Cal State Los Angeles, at 3:00 p.m.
