San Diego—NAIA No. 7 PLNU just lost its first match of the season to NCAA DIII University of Redlands 5-4 on Saturday, with the match decided in a close three-set struggle on court three.
The non-conference match began with doubles. Loma won on courts one and three while Redlands took two. PLNU's number one team
Tyler Bowman and Gregory De Andrade won 8-3 while
Angel Tavera and
KC Ensley just barely snagged their match, 9-8 on three.
Court two watched Green and Gold's
Diego Tavera and Mike Zablan get edged by Bulldogs Mark Bloom and Patrick Lipscomb, 9-7.
Point Loma was up 2-1 heading into singles and had its chances. De Andrade took his match in two sets 6-1 and 6-4 on two while Zablan on court five won his first set 6-3 and fought for the second, winning 7-6.
These wins brought Loma up to four points and just one away from the team victory, but unfortunately, the Sea Lions couldn't pull off the one win they needed to clinch the match.
Chad Rubin on court six was defeated in two 6-3 sets.
Diego Tavera was beaten on court four 6-4, 6-2. Court one went to three sets with Bowman winning 6-4 in the first set but going on to lose then next two 6-0, 6-1.
It came down to the match between PLNU's Ensley and Redland's Taylor Hunt on court three. Like Bowman, Ensley also won his first set 6-4 but then was barely edged 7-6 in the second set. The third set finished 6-1 with Hunt the victor.
As the first tilt of the season, the records stand at 1-0 for the Bulldogs and 0-1 for the Sea Lions.
The men will play their second match of the year against No. 1 Fresno Pacific on Feb 18 at 1 p.m. on the home courts while the PLNU ladies will play their first match on Monday at UCSD starting at 2:30 p.m.
