FRESNO, Calif. -- NAIA No. 7 ranked Point Loma Nazarene was defeated 8-1 by conference leader and top-ranked Fresno Pacific on Saturday. It was the second consecutive GSAC loss that the Sea Lions suffered this week.
Loma falls to 7-6 overall, 3-4 in the GSAC; while Fresno bumps up to 16-1 overall and continues its winning streak in the conference at 9-0.
The Green and Gold's point came via the pairing of
Diego Tavera and
Andrew Combs who won court three doubles. The Sea Lions took their match 8-5 from Sunbirds Stefan Loop and Lloyd Bruce-Burgess.
The rest of the match didn't go so well for PLNU.
For doubles, Loma's No. 1 team Greg De Andrade and
Tyler Bowman was defeated by Xavier Smith and Cledson Carvalho 8-3 and No. 2
KC Ensley and
Angel Tavera lost to Nathan Martinet Kirill Sinitsyn by the same score.
Singles saw straight losses in straight sets. From the top of the ladder down: De Andrade fell to Smith in two 6-3 sets; Bowman was overcome by Sinitsyn in two 6-2 sets; Ensley got the closest to winning a set from Martinet on court three but ended up losing 6-4, 6-3; Mike Zablan fell in straight 6-1 sets to Carvalho;
Diego Tavera lost 6-0, 6-1 to Bruce-Burgess and
Chad Rubin lost 6-1, 6-3 to Amarit Sanchez.
Next up for Point Loma is an away conference match against No. 8 Concordia on Tuesday at 12 pm.
