COSTA MESA, Calif. -- The NAIA No. 6-ranked Sea Lions defeated eighth-ranked Concordia 5-4 Tuesday afternoon at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center. The win reverses two consecutive losses and boosts Point Loma Nazarene's record to 9-5 overall, 6-3 GSAC. The Eagles fell to 7-5, 6-4 conference.
PLNU gained the advantage in doubles from courts two and three. No. 2 team
Jessica Kwan and
Kiersten Steinhauer easily won their match 8-3 over CUI partners Johanna Sceresini and Summer Beaird.
Wileen Chiu and
Sharon Reibstein took their match 8-5 from opponents Kristin Yep and Ulrike Hahn. Loma's setback came on court one where
Maika Adair and
Hope Penner were defeated 8-1 by Bettina Radke and Jordan Kimura.
Singles play split right down the middle with PLNU winning one upper ladder match and two lower ladder matches. The upper ladder match came from Kwan on court three. She easily beat CUI's Hahn in straight 6-1 sets.
The lower ladder matches were won at courts five and six, thanks to Reibstein and Chiu respectively. Chiu won 6-4, 6-2 over Yep while Reibstein split sets with Beaird but snagged the final set for Loma 6-1. That point would prove to be the match decider for the Green and Gold.
Adair on court one fell to Radke in two quick 6-0, 6-1 sets while Steinhauer on two was similarly defeated by Kimura in straight 6-1 sets. The other PLNU loss was on court four where Penner was beat by Sceresini 6-2, 6-4.
Loma will be traveling to Biola on Saturday for its next match. Games begin at 11 am.
