SAN DIEGO –
Natalie Swift,
Krista Gregory and
Amanda Mitchell each scored first half goals to help the Point Loma women's soccer team cruise to a 3-0 victory over Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday (Sept. 22).
The win keeps the Sea Lions atop the Pacific West Conference standings with a perfect 3-0-0 record (5-1-0 overall). The loss drops the Argonauts to 1-5-1 and 0-2-1 in the PacWest.
Swift got the Sea Lions on the board first in the 14th minute for a lead they would never relinquish. The freshman from Newport Beach, Calif., notched her second goal of the season on a rocket kick from 12 yards out after a touch pass from Gregory.
Gregory would rack up her third goal of the season just five minutes later after taking advantage of poor ball handling by the Argonauts' defenders. NDNU tried to clear a ball but it bounced off their defender to an open Gregory for the unopposed shot.
The Sea Lions would put the match away in the 35th minute when Mitchell outraced the NDNU goal keeper to a ball at the top of the box and deposited it into the net to go up 3-0.
“Tactically the women are doing some fantastic stuff,” said Point Loma head women's soccer coach
Tim Hall. “All the goals were very well set and the women executed them tactically. They were fun to watch.
“The team is starting to gel and understand the system on their own initiative so I am very happy,” Hall continued. “Today the team played very well in the first half. We subbed a bit more in the second half which affected some of our continuity, but I thought the team played two great halves of soccer.”
Hall had the chance to play a variety of women as 19 Sea Lions saw game action today. Six Sea Lions took at least one shot in the match as PLNU outshot NDNU 10-3.
Tiffany Kracy and Lupe Herrara each made one save for PLNU. PLNU goal keepers have not allowed a goal in the last 289 minutes of play.
Kelly Christerson led Point Loma with three shots.
“Our subs kept the level of play up and I was proud of the whole team's effort today,” Hall concluded.
The Sea Lions women's soccer team will now prepare to welcome in long-time rival Azusa Pacific for the schools' first-ever meeting in PacWest play.
“There is a huge rivalry between the two schools,” Hall said. “Whenever PLNU and APU play in women's soccer is it's always a coin flip and a battle.”
