Sea Lions battle Cougars, Hawks this week

WHAT'S HAPPENING:
The Point Loma women's basketball team will open its week on the road at Cal State San Marcos (Jan. 23) then return home on Saturday (Jan. 26) to host Holy Names. Tipoffs are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively.

FOLLOW ALONG:
Live stats and live video will be available for the home games this week but PLNU fans will have to rely on a Twitter feed to track the game at Cal State San Marcos on Wednesday. That feed can be accessed by going to www.twitter.com/CSUSMgameday. For Saturday's game, live stats and video can be accessed through the Sea Lions' website at www.plnusealions.com and clicking on the corresponding link on the right side of the page. A LOOK AT THE SEA LIONS:
The Sea Lions went 1-1 last week to raise their record to 5-9 overall and 2-4 in the Pacific West Conference. PLNU ranks third in the conference in scoring defense (59.1) and 3-pointers made per game (6.5). Point Loma's defense has also propelled the team to the top of the conference rankings in field goal percentage defense (.330) and blocked shots (6.8).

Callie Rhoads has taken over the team lead in scoring with 12.6 points per game. She has notched double-figures in eight of the last nine games, while shooting 52 percent from the field and 46 percent from 3-point range during that span. Rhoads now leads the PacWest in 3-point percentage by hitting nearly 44 percent of her shots from long range. She has also moved into 13th in the PacWest in scoring (12.6) and seventh in field goal percentage (.500). Carlotta Kloppenburg joins Rhoads as one of the top long range shooters in the conference. Kloppenburg is fourth in the PacWest with 2.3 treys per game. Andrea Campbell continues to lead the conference with 3.6 blocks per game, and Abby Boorman is sixth (1.7). Savannah Erskine ranks third in the league with 4.1 assists per game and 11th with 2.1 steals. 

SCOUTING CAL STATE SAN MARCOS:
The Cougars are 9-16 on the season. Danielle Cooper averages a double-double with 10.7 points and 10.6 rebounds to lead CSU San Marcos. Sherika Miller paces the squad with 10.9 ppg. As a team CSUSM averages 61.7 ppg and outrebounds its opponents by 4.2 per game. The Cougars are making just 24 percent of their shots from long range and average 23 turnovers a game.

This is the second time in a week these teams have met. The Cougars came to Golden Gymnasium on Wednesday, Jan. 16 and the Sea Lions sent them away with a 55-41 loss. This was the last game CSUSM has played. Callie Rhoads led the Sea Lions with 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists, as well as five of PLNU's 19 steals on the night. Erin Andersen tallied a double-double with 13 points and a team-high 10 boards in the win. The Sea Lions combined a smothering full-court press with a nearly impenetrable zone defense to force 31 turnovers and hold the visiting Cougars more than 20 points below their season average.

SCOUTING HOLY NAMES:
The Hawks are 9-9 on the season and 3-5 in the PacWest. They are pacing the conference in scoring with 80.1 ppg and a +14.3 rebounding margin. They average 20 offensive rebounds per game and collect over 43 percent of their missed shots. Britney Postestio is one of three Hawks averaging in double-figures. She leads the team with 17.8 ppg. That scoring average ranks her third in the PacWest. She also leads her team with 3.7 assists and 2.9 treys per game. Renique Fitzpatrick is the Hawks leading rebounder with 8.9 boards per game. Fitzpatrick (11.1 ppg) and Sonia Aguilar (16.7 ppg) are the other two student-athletes averaging double-figures for HNU.

NEXT GAMES:
The Point Loma women's basketball team will host three games next week against PacWest opponents from the Bay Area. The Sea Lions will welcome Academy of Art will come to town on Thursday, Jan. 31 and Dominican on Saturday, Feb. 2. The Sea Lions will close out the homestand against Notre Dame de Namur on Monday, Feb. 4.
