SAN DIEGO -
Callie Rhoads paced five Sea Lions in double-figures with 20 points to lead the Point Loma women's basketball team to a 90-52 win over Cal State San Marcos on Wednesday (Jan. 23).
The 90 points were a season-best for the Sea Lions (6-9), which had all nine of its student-athletes score in the contest. Rhoads was a perfect 8-of-8 from the field as she recorded a season-high of 20 points. That mark was just one point short of matching her career-high for points which she set her freshman season against Holy Names.
Carlotta Kloppenburg came off the bench to record 18 points, which included knocking down four treys for PLNU.
Lindsay Honea also came off the bench, and scored 13 points in just 10 minutes. She went 3-of-4 from long range and also added three steals. PLNU also got double-figure scoring efforts out of
Erin Andersen (10) and
Jessica Escorza (14).
Abby Boorman grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
"We really played together as a team," said junior guard
Lindsay Honea. "We played for each other, not just ourselves, and that's what matters."
Point Loma was sluggish out of the gate and trailed 7-6 five minutes into the first half. Rhoads then scored nine straight points to fuel a PLNU run and put Point Loma up for good at 15-7. The Sea Lions would go on to outscore CSUSM 31-8 the rest of the half and take a commanding 46-15 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Point Loma would push its lead to 49 points on a layup by Honea before settling on the 38-point final margin of victory. PLNU shot 47 percent in the game, including going 10-of-22 from 3-point range. The Sea Lions also forced the Cougars into 31 turnovers and outscored the Cougars' bench 38-18.
"Everyone is ready to play our best; the way we know we can," Honea continued. "We haven't done that consistently yet this year. This win feels good, and it starts us on a positive note when we play as team like we did tonight."
Sherika Miller led Cal State San Marcos (9-16) with 14 points.
The Sea Lions will now return home to host Holy Names in a Pacific West Conference contest Saturday, Jan. 26 at 2:00 p.m.
