SAN DIEGO –
Jessica Escorza and
Savannah Erskine each posted career-highs in points to lead the Point Loma women's basketball team to an 84-65 win over Holy Names in a Pacific West Conference showdown on Saturday, Jan. 26.
The Sea Lions have now won three of their last four games to improve to 7-9 on the season and to 3-5 in the PacWest. This was the third straight loss for the Hawks who fell to 9-10 on the season (3-6 PacWest).
Escorza led all scorers, and four Sea Lions in double-figures with 24 points. She hit 8-of-15 shots from the field and all eight attempts at the line to go along with four steals. Erskine poured in 20 points for the Sea Lions while grabbing seven rebounds, handing out seven assists and making five steals. Those 20 points topped her previous season-high of 18 which she set at Dixie State. Erskine and Escorza combined to go 13-of-13 at the charity stripe to help PLNU make a season-best 20 free throws in just 21 attempts.
Both teams traded blows in the first half with eight ties and 12 lead changes in the period. The Sea Lions took the lead for good with a five-point spurt at the end of the half, capped off by a trey from
Carlotta Kloppenburg as time expired to take a 41-39 lead into halftime.
PLNU would then start the second half on a 7-0 run to build their lead to nine. HNU then answered with an 8-0 run to cut Point Loma's lead to one (48-47). This would be one of four times in the second half the Hawks would cut the Sea Lions' lead to one, but they would never again take the lead. The last time came with nine minutes left in the half and PLNU responded with a 13-1 run and never looked back.
Callie Rhoads recorded her first double-double of the season with 12 points and a team-leading 11 rebounds. She scored nine of her 12 points after halftime and also added three assists. She has now scored in double-figures in five straight games, and in nine of the last 10. Kloppenburg was the opposite of Rhoads, scoring 11 of her 16 points in the first half, including making three treys.
Abby Boorman also added 10 rebounds and blocked six shots off the bench for PLNU.
Sonia Aguilar paced Holy Names with 20 points. She scored 17 of her 20 points in the first half. PLNU held her to three points on just 1-of-6 shooting in the second half. Yesenia Garzon had a game-high 16 rebounds.
The Sea Lions will continue its homestand next week with three contests against Bay Area schools. Academy of Art will come to town on Thursday, Jan. 31 and Dominican on Saturday, Feb. 2. The Sea Lions will close out the homestand against Notre Dame de Namur on Monday, Feb. 4.
