Mitchell's goal in 89' sends Sea Lions passed AAU

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO - Much of the excitement of soccer comes from the anticipation of the moment of a goal, and today the Sea Lions women's soccer team made their fans wait nearly until the last possible minute to taste that excitement. Amanda Mitchell knocked in the lone goal of the match in the 89th minute off a free kick from Leah Porter to lift Point Loma to a 1-0 victory over Academy of Art on Saturday (Oct. 12).

The Sea Lions are now 6-4-1 on the season and 5-1-1 on the Pacific West Conference. The 16 points PLNU has collected in the PacWest has the team tied for second place in the conference with Azusa Pacific. The loss drops Academy of Art to 2-8-1 on the season and to 1-4-1 in the PacWest.

Point Loma lead in both corner kicks (4-0) and shots (16-11) in the match but was just not able to find the goal until Porter connected with Mitchell on a set piece right in front of the net for her third goal of the season.

"The girls played really, really well from the opening whistle today," said PLNU head coach Tim Hall. "Our energy levels were high and we came to play. We played well as a team throughout the match but just couldn't get the ball in the net."

Both teams had a good chance to put a goal on the board earlier in the match as each had the opportunity at a penalty kick. AAU missed their opportunity right before halftime with Hannah Emmett hit the cross bar and Lupe Herrera scooped it up for the save. PLNU would get its chance in the 65th minute but Porter was denied on her shot by goalkeeper Rachael Rempe.

Herrera made four saves to ensure the scoreless contest for Point Loma. This was her fourth shutout of the season. Rachael Rempe made two saves in the loss for the Urban Knights.

"Academy of Art is a much better team than their record indicates," Hall continued. "This was a very tough place to get a win."

Point Loma will be back in action on Monday to close out its Bay Area trip with a match against Holy Names at 1:00 p.m.
