SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma men's soccer team suffered its first loss in Pacific West Conference play this season when it fell to Hawaii Pacific, 2-0, on Saturday, Oct. 5.
Brais Garcia scored both goals for the HPU Sea Warriors (5-3-1, 1-3-0 PacWest) which earned its first win in conference this season. Despite the loss, the Sea Lions continue to stand in third place in the PacWest with 11 points (3-1-2) and are now 5-4-2 overall.
The first goal of the match came two minutes before the half as HPU's goalie Mael Lefebvre booted the ball the length of the field to an awaiting Garcia who shot a perfectly placed ball from the top right corner of the box into the net. The goal left the Sea Lions a bit shocked and sent the Sea Warriors into halftime with a 1-0 lead. Â
Garcia would post his second goal of the match right after halftime in the 50th minute when he received a pass from Felipe Silva inside the box and was able to beat PLNU goalkeeper
Carter Phillips to the ball and poke it into the net to give the Sea Warriors the two-goal lead which would prove to be the difference in the match.
"I was a little surprised to see it, but today was an example of men versus boys," said PLNU head coach
Phil Wolf. "We showed our youth and softness today. We also missed Nico (Tagaloa) out there who brings some steel to our group. We weren't tough enough and it was a typical men vs. boys performance."
Point Loma was held without a shot on goal in the contest and HPU outshot them 10-8 overall.
"The game was lost in the first half," Wolf added. "We had some really good chances and didn't take them. Then we go down 1-0. There was no reason to be down in that first half. It should have at least been 0-0 at half but instead we are chasing the game. That wasn't a great performance by us.
"This is a good reminder of the constant need and desire to get better, and not thinking you've arrived," Wolf explained. "These guys have so much to play for. You just have to move on from this, get better and take it as a lesson learned. They had a few pretty classy players and he finished one that was very difficult to finish and we had a few that were easy and we didn't finish and that's the game."
The Sea Lions will look to right the ship next week when it returns to the Bay Area for a pair of PacWest contests. They will face Academy of Art on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 2:30 p.m., and Holy Names on Monday, Oct. 14 at 3:30 p.m.
