OAKLAND - The Point Loma women's basketball team dropped a 73-65 overtime decision to Pacific West Conference rival Holy Names on the road on Thursday (Dec. 5).
PLNU (2-4, 0-2 PacWest) trailed by as many as 10 points in the game before fighting back with late 11-4 run. It took a two-point lead with 10 seconds left in regulation on a layup by
Abby Boorman, however, HNU had the answer as Britney Machado-Potestio hit a jumper with three seconds remaining to send the game to overtime tied at 63-63.
In the extra period the Sea Lions could just not find their footing offensively as they went just 1-0f-9 from the field and were outscored 10-2 to drop their second straight PacWest road contest.
Callie Rhoads led the Sea Lions with 24 points. She connected on 5-of-6 shots from behind the arc and also knocked down five free throws before fouling out early in the overtime period. She also had five steals, one of which led directly to Boorman's game-tying layup at the end of regulation. This was her second time in three games reaching double-figures in the scoring column. Boorman,
Jessica Escorza and
Carlotta Kloppenburg each added 10 points. Boorman also added nine rebounds, one short of her season-high.
Holy Names' (5-2, 1-0 PacWest) Sonia Aguilar matched Rhoads with 24 points. Machado-Potestio added 19 points, and Renique Fitzpatrick posted a double-double with 15 points and 20 rebounds. Those 20 rebounds are the most for any PacWest student-athlete this season.
Once again the Sea Lions struggled on the glass as they were outrebounded 57-34. Twenty-one of those rebounds came on the offensive glass which led directly to 23 second-chance points for the Hawks.
PLNU stayed in the game with their defense. It forced HNU into 28 turnovers, 18 of which came via the steal.
Point Loma will conclude its opening PacWest road trip on Saturday (Dec. 7) against Dominican (CA) at 1:00 p.m. Â
