PHOENIX - The Point Loma men's tennis team captured its first win of the 2013 season with a 7-2 victory over Sonoma State on Saturday (Feb. 9), but that win only came as the result of a full-team effort.

When the Sea Lions' No. 3 singles player and member of the No. 2 doubles team, Jakob Kevelaerts was forced to withdrawn from competition due to injury, every member of the PLNU squad stepped up their performance to earn the win.

The void of Kevelaerts in singles caused coach Rich Hills to slide each member of the team up a spot to make of the difference. Kaptan Kaster took over at No. 3 and earned a point for Point Loma with a 6-4 and 6-4 win over the Seawolves' Drexler Dy. Daniel Milliken also earned a win at No. 4 by edging David Hutton in a tiebreaker 6-0, 4-6 and 10-4. Jakob's brother Bram also moved up a spot to pick up another point for PLNU at No. 5 singles with a 6-3 and 6-2 win over Ryan Harris. Michael Zablan gave the Sea Lions four points in singles with a 6-2 and 6-3 win over Robert Henry at No. 2.

Each of these individuals also helped Point Loma sweep doubles. Zablan teamed up with Brooks Baldinger at No. 1 doubles and dominated Hutton and Henry 8-1. The other double matches were much closer as Milliken and Kaster ousted Roberts and Harris 9-7, and Bram Kevelaerts and Kevin McKelligan won a tiebreaker over Dy and Manning 9-8 (2).

The next match for the PLNU men's tennis team will be Saturday, Feb. 16 at Redlands. The match will start at 10:00 a.m.
