LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Point Loma Nazarene put up a good fight, but the men ultimately fell 7-2 to cross-town rival UC San Diego on the road Thursday afternoon.
The Sea Lions were able to steal a point in doubles from the NCAA Division II No. 28 ranked Tritons.
Brooks Baldinger and
Jakob Kevelaerts won their match on court one 8-3. However, the other PLNU doubles teams did fare as well.
Michael Zablan and
Kaptan Kaster fell 8-4 on court two, and
Daniel Milliken and
Dillon Brown dropped their match 8-1 on No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, the Tritons controlled nearly every matchup. UCSD's Camill Salomon, the 30th ranked singles player in NCAA Division II, edged out Baldinger 7-6 and 6-4 on court one. At No. 2 singles, Zablan dropped his match 7-5 and 6-2. Milliken fell 6-2 and 6-3 on court four; Kaster lost 6-0 and 6-2 at No. 5 singles; and
Kevin McKelligan was defeated 6-2 and 6-0 on court six.
The Sea Lions' lone singles point came from Kevelaerts on court three. The freshman won his match in straight sets (6-3 and 6-3) over UCSD's Ganesh Alagappan.
With the loss, the Sea Lions fell to 7-14 on the season. The Tritons improved to 12-9.
PLNU will wrap up regular season play next Monday when they host the Lions of Vanguard University, a former GSAC foe, before heading to Hawaii for the PacWest Conference Championships Thursday through Saturday (Apr. 18-20).
