SAN DIEGO -
Nico Tagaloa scored his first two collegiate goals and
Daniel ten Bosch added a goal and three assists to help the Point Loma men's soccer team cruise past rival Southern Nazarene 7-0 on Thursday, Sept. 12.
The result puts the Sea Lions (1-2-0) in the win column for the first time this season. The loss drops the Crimson Storm to 1-2-0.
Tagaloa, a freshman midfielder from Orange, Calif, got all the scoring started for Point Loma in the 11th minute when he headed in a cross from fellow freshman
Brady Johansen for PLNU's first goal of the season.
Another freshman would also come through with the second goal for the Sea Lions when
Daniel ten Bosch found
Ricardo Martinez on a nice pass in tight quarters in front of the goal for the score. This would be the first of the three assists for the sophomore ten Bosch.
PLNU would tack on two more goals before the half and take a 4-0 lead into the locker room. The first was an own goal by SNU when a player tried to redirect a cross from PLNU's
Jonathan Tiggs but deflected back into his own goal. The second was another goal by Tagalao. His shot from outside the box sailed perfectly into the top corner of the net and out of the reach of the diving goalkeeper.
The Sea Lions would go on to tack on three more goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to cruise to the comfortable 7-0 victory.
Griffin Fuller,
Bobby Ornelas and ten Bosch each scored once for the three in the second half goals.
"For our program and where we were at last year, and after starting the year 0-2 it was very nice to get that win," said PLNU head coach
Phil Wolf.
"The freshmen have been learning on the job but they are good players and it is just going to be a process over time," Wolf continued. "They have a lot of qualities and you see it in little bits and pieces but to win college soccer matches you have to put 90 minutes together. We are going to learn over time how to do that, and you certainly saw it today."
Point Loma outshot SNU 14-7 in the match.
Carter Phillips led the Sea Lions with three saves.
"We have been having a lot of trouble this year on the attacking part of the game," said sophomore forward
Daniel ten Bosch. "For us to win this match 7-0 is something we needed. You could tell today everyone had that attacking flare that we were missing in the first two games.
"We knew this game was the deciding factor to whether we continue our losing streak and we came out early and set the tone," ten Bosch added.
Coach Wolf was also very pleased with the win and hopes it will build some momentum for his young squad.
"The nice thing about this win is we haven't had a day like this in two years," said Wolf. "Hopefully we built a little confidence and take it into Saturday, which will be a big match for us."
The PLNU men's soccer team will now prepare to face another non-conference opponent when Montana State Billings comes to town for Saturday (Sept. 14) showdown starting at 11:00 a.m.
