SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma men's soccer team dropped in first match in five decisions as San Diego Christian scored a goal in the 44th minute and held on for a 1-0 non-conference win over the Sea Lions on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
The loss evens Point Loma's record at 3-3-1 on the season (1-0-1 Pacific West Conference). This was the seventh straight win for the Hawks which improved to 7-1-0 with the result.
The lone goal of the match came right before halftime on a rebound. Andrew Robles fired a shot from the left corner of the box which sailed towards the lower right corner of the net. PLNU goalkeeper
Carter Phillips made an attempt at a diving save but was unable to corral the ball and it deflected to Neil Keith who was waiting in front of the net for the lone goal of the contest.
"They had nothing there but we left it on the ground and they finished it up," said PLNU head coach
Phil Wolf about the goal. "There were certainly more dangerous chances than that one in the match. It was a disappointing goal it give up."
The Sea Lions best chance came in the 64th minute. PLNU worked the ball around and found
Dylan Wingrove open in the box but his one-timer sailed high above the net.
"We worked it to a really good spot with good combination play and you just have to hit the frame there," Wolf noted.
PLNU just never found many open looks against the Hawks' physical defense. The Sea Lions had just two shots on goal, both of which were headers off crosses. Meanwhile, SDC had seven shots on goal, six of which Phillips stonewalled.
"At the end of the day they get the result because we didn't have enough quality in the final third (of the field)," Wolf said. "It is something for us to work on.
"I am not worried about the result," Wolf continued. "We got what we deserved because we gave up that soft goal and we ran out of ideas on the final third. We just have to continue to improve, get better and add more pieces to our game. If we can do that we will be where we want to be at the end, wherever that is. This is just another stepping stone in the process."
The PLNU men's soccer team will return to action on Saturday to welcome in the first of four PacWest opponents to come to town over the next week. The Sea Lions will take on Hawaii Hilo this Saturday (Sept. 28) starting at 1:30 p.m.
