SAN DIEGO -Â Four Sea Lions recorded double-doubles as the Point Loma women's basketball team raced out to a 17-3 lead and held on for an 87-74 win over Holy Names on Thursday, Jan. 2.
This was the fourth straight win for PLNU (6-4, 4-2 PacWest) which avenged an overtime loss at HNU earlier in the season. The loss was the first for Holy Names (7-3, 3-1 PacWest) in conference play, and snapped its six game winning streak.
Callie Rhoads scored a team-leading 20 points and grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass.
Abby Boorman also set a new career-high with 15 boards to go along with her 12 points for her first double-double of the season.
Savannah Erskine posted her second straight double-double. This time she had a career-high 12 assists to go along with 14 points after registering 17 points and 10 steals in her last contest against Notre Dame de Namur.
Erin Andersen gave the Sea Lions their fourth student-athlete with a double-double as she recorded 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.
"I told them that I was looking for everyone to pick up their game with Jessica being out," said PLNU head coach
Bill Westphal. "We have to play as a team with balance to be successful. We are working hard and everyone is accepting their roles."
Carlotta Kloppenburg scored 14 of her 19 points in the first half to help PLNU take an early lead which it would never relinquish. She had eight points in the first five minutes of the contest as Point Loma scored 17 of the first 20 points. Holy Names continued to chip away at the Sea Lions lead and had it down to five points at halftime (46-41).
In the second half, HNU cut PLNU's lead to two points at 59-57. Rhoads then hit back-to-back 3-point baskets, and after a layup by Boorman, and then another layup to pace a 10-0 run by the Sea Lions which extended their lead back to double-figures and sealed the victory.
After struggling in the rebounding category for much of the season Point Loma dominated Holy Names on the glass Thursday. The Sea Lions outrebounded the Hawks 58-42. The 58 rebounds topped the Sea Lions' previous season-best by 20 boards, and the 23 rebounds on the offensive glass were eight better than any game this season.
Sonia Aguilar had a game-high 27 points for Holy Names. Britney Machado-Potestio also came through with 17 points.
