Box Score
SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma women's basketball team suffered another heartbreaking defeat as Dixie State rallied late to beat the Sea Lions, 70-67, on Saturday, Jan. 25.
Abby Boorman paced PLNU (8-8, 6-6 Pacific West Conference) with her third straight double-double. She posted 11 point to go along with career-highs of 16 rebounds and eight blocks. She also added four steals and her first 3-point basket of the season.
Erin Andersen led Point Loma with 18 points, and
Savannah Erskine added 13 points, four assists and five steals.
Despite Boorman's presence on the inside the Sea Lions were unable to stop the Red Storm (8-9, 6-5 PacWest) in the paint. Taylor Mann had 17 points and 16 rebounds, while Haileigh Emerine and Nanea Woods grabbed 11 boards apiece. This trio helped DSC outrebound PLNU 61-33 in the contest, including 27-9 on the offensive glass which led to 15 second-chance points for the Red Storm.
The Sea Lions stayed scrappy throughout the contest to nearly help them overcome the significant rebounding differential. Point Loma had 19 steals in the contest and committed six less turnovers than their counterparts. The Sea Lions were able to convert those turnovers into 14 fast break points.
PLNU led much of the first half but the final 20 minutes were back and forth. DSC started the second half by scoring the first four points to tie the game at 39-39. The teams would trade baskets until the game was tied 58-58 with just less than six minutes remaining.
With one minute left DSC held a three-point lead with Boorman going to the free throw line. The senior knocked down both free throws to bring the score to within one point. PLNU then got a defensive stand and the ball back with 29 seconds on the clock. Erskine took the ball to the hoop with 14 seconds remaining and had a good look at the rim but her left-handed layup rolled off the iron and Dixie State collected the rebound and was immediately fouled.
After the Red Storm made both free throws PLNU still had a chance to tie with 10 seconds left. They pushed the ball up the floor and found
Callie Rhoads in the corner for a 3-pointer but her shot was blocked by Kaylah Miller to end the game.
Dixie State's Haley Holmstead led all scorers in the game with 19 points as she went 9-of-20 from the field.
This is the second time in their last three conference losses that the Sea Lions had a game-winning layup roll off the rim in the final 15 seconds.
Point Loma will now prepare to welcome in a pair of PacWest opponents next week. Dominican (CA) will be on town on Thursday, Jan. 30, and Academy of Art on Saturday, Feb. 1.
