Second half surge sends Sea Lions past Sunbirds

Box Score

FRESNO, Calif. - Erin Andersen scored a career-high 24 points and Point Loma used a 17-0 second-half run to snap Fresno Pacific's six-game winning streak on the road, 85-75, on Saturday, Feb. 8.

The Sunbirds (9-12, 9-6 PacWest) entered the game as one of the hottest teams in Pacific West Conference as both FPU and Academy of Art had won their previous six contests.

Andersen's career-best game, especially when she chose to score those points, could not have come at a better time for the Sea Lions (11-9, 8-7 PacWest). Andersen registered 11 of her 24 points during PLNU's 17-0 run in the second half in which it turned a four-point deficit into a 13-point lead (66-53). She would finish the game 11-of-12 from the field wo go with six rebounds and two blocks.

First Andersen hit a 3-pointer and then a layup, and after a trey by Carlotta Kloppenburg, Andersen scored six more straight points before Jessica Escorza capped off the run with a basket from long range. During the run PLNU was 7-of-7 from the field and had assist on six of those baskets.

A basket by Jenay Herring, who had a game-high 27 points for the Sunbirds, ended the run but it did not stop the Sea Lions' momentum. They would push their lead all the way to 16 points on a pair of free throws by Callie Rhoads with 5:20 remaining. FPU would attempt a late comeback and they Sea Lions' lead to six late but PLNU went 7-of-8 at the free throw line in the final 1:09 to earn the win.

Rhoads joined Andersen and two other Sea Lions in double-figure points with 16. She made three 3-pointers and went 7-of-8 at the charity stripe. Carlotta Kloopenburg led PLNU with four baskets from long range en route to scoring 14 points. Jessica Escorza also notched 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting in her first game back from injury. Abby Boorman matched her career-high with 16 rebounds.

"After sitting out these last few weeks I was a little nervous, but I was really happy to be out there with the team," said the junior forward Escorza. "We've grown a lot. Everyone is stepping up and we're all getting stronger. We real strong chemistry and we are all playing hard for our seniors."

Point Loma's next game will be Tuesday, Feb. 11 at home against Chaminade (3-16, 3-10) at 5:30 p.m.
