PLNU upsets #14 FPU for second time this season

FRESNO, Calif. - It took 25 years for the Point Loma women's tennis to get its first win over Fresno Pacific and all of a sudden its happened twice in one year as the Sea Lions grinded out a 5-4 victory over the Sunbirds on Saturday (Mar. 15).

The win evened the Sea Lions' season record at 7-7 and dropped Fresno Pacific to 4-6.

The match opened with PLNU capturing two of the three doubles points. Maika Adair and Hillary Ramage teamed up at No. 2 doubles to defeat Laure-Anne Josso and Alison Carre 8-3. Preethika Venugopal and Kaitlyn Murray also won at No. 3 doubles by the identical 8-3 score.

The match then turned to singles with PLNU needing a split in the six matches. Kirsty Mountain picked up the first point with a 6-1 and 6-1 win at No. 6s. Venugopal backed up her doubles win with a straight set 6-2 and 6-2 win at No. 4. Regina von Koch then grabbed the decisive fifth team point with a 6-4 and 6-4 win over Angelika Sobiecka at No. 2s.

Point Loma will return home to host Hope International on Tuesday, Mar. 18 at 4:00 p.m.
