Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

3-point attack leads PLNU past Concordia

IRVINE, Calif. - Madison West hit six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Point Loma women's basketball team to a 77-58 road win at Concordia (CA) on Saturday, Dec. 12.

The win was the first for PLNU in PacWest play this season. The Sea Lions are now 7-3 on the season and 1-2 in the PacWest. The loss dropped CUI to 1-6 (0-3 PacWest).

West was the driving force behind a long range Point Loma shooting attack that saw the Sea Lions go 13-of-22 from behind the arc (59 percent). The junior guard was 6-of-8 on her 3-point shots, en route to matching her season-high with 22 points. This is the third time this season she has reached the 22-point mark.

Alex Brunk hit three 3-pointers and went 7-of-14 from the field to score 18 points for the Sea Lions. She added three assists, eight rebounds and two steals. Sydney Tonack (14) and Amy Ogren (11) also reached double-figures for the PLNU. Roya Rustamzada stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, two 3-pointers and a game-high 10 rebounds and seven assists.

While the Sea Lions were knocking down their shots from behind the arc, they were also holding the Eagles to just 22 percent shooting from deep (4-of-18). PLNU edged CUI in the rebounding battle, 33-32, and forced the Eagles into five more turnovers (15-10).

"We played together as a unit, and made a point of emphasis to rebound and combat in the paint," said Point Loma assistant coach Dwayne Cosby. "Roya displayed why she is one of the best in the conference. She sacrificed her scoring to be a facilitator, and Madison was the main beneficiary."

Point Loma never trailed in the game. PLNU was up 39-23 at halftime and CUI never got closer than 12 points. The Sea Lions outscored the Eagles in every quarter but the third.

"We played brilliant in spurts," continued Cosby. "If we clean up some details and shoot like we did tonight, we will be very competitive."

Point Loma will continue its season next Saturday, Dec. 19 at No. 5 nationally ranked California Baptist. The game will tipoff at 5:00 p.m.
