SAN DIEGO - The No. 25 Point Loma upset No. 21 and regional rival Cal State Los Angeles, 6-3, on Tuesday, Feb. 10.
 
The Sea Lions (1-1) took two of three doubles to take the early lead in the match. The Sea Lions dominated at No. 3 doubles with Jen Weissmann and Madeline Cunningham winning 8-2, but lost 8-1 at No. 2. At the No. 1 spot Hillary Ramage and Nikki Newell edged the pair of Golden Eagles 8-5.
 
"It came down to No. 1 doubles where Hillary and Nikki did a great job of finishing their match out," said PLNU head coach Curt Wheeler. "They held strong and finished it off when they needed to. They gave us great momentum winning that second doubles point."
 
The match moved to singles where the Sea Lions took No. 3-6 to win the match 6-3. Regina von Koch, Preethika Venugopal and Hillary Ramage won at No. 3-5 in straight sets, and Kirsty Mountain finished off her opponent in a tiebreaker 4-6, 7-6 and 10-6.
 
"It was a tough one for our first win of the year," said PLNU head coach Curt Wheeler. "The women did a great job today. We came out strong from the start and did a very good job of finishing matches. Against Azusa Pacific we had a few that we didn't finish but today we did a good job of it."
 
The victory helps the Sea Lions avenge a 6-3 loss to CSULA last season.
 
Point Loma will have a short turnoaround as they will be back on the court tomorrow for its first road match of the season. PLNU will take on UC San Diego at 2:00 p.m. in La Jolla.
 
"It is always a tough match against UCSD," Wheeler explained. "They are ranked above us but we are going to be ready to go."
