PLNU hosts BYUH on Military Day this Saturday

The Point Loma women's basketball team will carry its five-game winning streak into Saturday's PacWest Conference contest against BYU-Hawaii. The Sea Lions and Seasiders will tip off at 2:00 p.m.

Military Night Returns on Saturday, Jan. 30
PLNU Athletics will host its second Military Night of the year this Saturday (Jan. 30) at 2:00 p.m. The Sea Lions will be honoring all former and active military members, and their admission to the game is free. Fans in attendance also will received a free PLNU camo logo t-shirt (while supplies last) which will be used as part of the in-game recognition.
 
Westphal recognition night set for Feb. 3
Coach Bill Westphal has been at the helm of the PLNU women's basketball team for the past 17 years, and prior to the season he announced this would be his last year on the bench. Join us on Feb. 3 as PLNU Athletics pays tribute to coach Westphal with a ceremony prior to the game. The Sea Lions will take on Cal State San Bernardino in a non-conference game starting at 7:00 p.m. For more information contact Danny Barnts at dbarnts@pointloma.edu.
 
A look at the Sea Lions
The Point Loma women's basketball team (13-5) has moved into sixth place in the PacWest standings with its 7-4 record. The winning streak has also allowed the Sea Lions to build a 2.5 game lead on seventh-place Holy Names. PLNU has won their last five games in PacWest play to erase the memories of their 1-3 start. Point Loma is 5-2 at home this season.
 
Madison West leads PLNU and ranks seventh in the PacWest with 16.4 points per game. She is second in the PacWest with 3.1 treys made per game, while ranking fifth in field goal percentage (.462), and third in 3-point percentage (.444). She is also fourth in the league in minutes played (35.3). Alex Brunk is 13th in scoring (14.1), eighth in rebounding (8.0) and third in steals (2.6). Roya Rustamzada is fourth in the PacWest in steals (2.4), and 10th in both rebounding (7.9) and assists (3.5), while averaging 13.2 points per game. Sydney Tonack gives PLNU its fourth double-figure scorer. She is averaging 10.6 ppg, to go along with 1.4 blocks (seventh PacWest).
 
As a team, the Sea Lions are averaging 68.9 points per game and are allowing 62.7 ppg. Point Loma ranks second in the PacWest in 3-point percentage (.364) and fourth in 3-pointers made per game (7.3).
 
Rustamzada picks up Defender of the Week award
Roya Rustamzada became the first Point Loma women's basketball student-athlete to earn a PacWest weekly honor in 2015-16, as she was named the conference's Defender of the Week for the week of Jan. 18-24. The sophomore forward from Temecula, Calif. (Great Oak HS) powered a stellar defensive effort in two wins by Point Loma, running the Sea Lions winning streak to five games. She averaged 8.0 rebounds, 4.5 steals, 10.5 points and 4.0 assists per game. She matched her season-high with five steals against Dixie State, adding 10 rebounds, and had four more steals against Fresno Pacific. Point Loma limited its two opponents to 67.5 points per game and 39 percent shooting.
 
A look at the Seasiders
BYU-Hawaii is 7-9 on the season and is tied for ninth in the PacWest with a 4-7 record. The Seasiders snapped a three-game slide with a victory over Dixie State in its last contest (Jan. 26). BYUH averages 69.3 points per game and shoots .370 percent from the field. The Seasiders rank third in the league with a .705 free throw percentage and in rebounding (44.1 rpg). Celeste Claw and Jiashan Cui are tied for the team-lead with 13.3 ppg. Cui and Claw are first and third in the PacWest in free throw percentage with marks of .894 and .848, respectively.
 
Next week
Point Loma will host two games next week. On Wednesday, Feb. 3 the Sea Lions will welcome in non-conference opponent Cal State San Bernardino on Coach Westphal Recognition Night starting at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, PLNU will return to PacWest play against Hawaii Pacific at 4:00 p.m.
