SAN DIEGO - The No. 33 Point Loma women's tennis team upset No. 16 Cal State LA, 6-3 by outlasting the Golden Eagles in a match which went over five hours (Feb. 10).
 
This was the second win of the season for the Sea Lions (2-1) and it dropped CSULA to 1-1.
 
Point Loma began the match by taking doubles matches at No. 2 with Hilary Ramage and Nicole Camaratta (8-4) and at No. 3 with Michelle Torres and Jen Weissmann (8-4). When the match moved to singles, Torres and Camaratta took care of their opponents in straight sets. However, CSULA also picked up a pair of points at No. 3 and No. 6 singles to make it a 4-3 match with No. 1 and No. 2 singles still going on.
 
Both Nikki Newell at No. 1 and Regina von Koch at No. 2 lost the first set of their matches but were able to bounce back and win the second to send their matches to a decisive third set. Von Koch had the honors of claiming the clinching point when she defeated Elizaveta Sokolova 4-6, 6-3 and 6-4. Newell continued to battle and played for nearly an hour after von Koch had ended but she came away victorious in the end 6-7, 7-5 and 7-6.
 
"We did a really good job battling today," said Point Loma head coach Curt Wheeler. "Every match was a battle and we did a good job staying in matches even when we didn't start well. This was a great win for our team."
 
"It can be really difficult to drop the first set and come back to win the next two," Wheeler added. "We needed both those matches. It was huge by both Regina and Nikki to stay in those matches then battle back."
 
The Sea Lions next match will be at Azusa Pacific on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 11:00 a.m.
