PLNU says goodbye to a legend & seniors Friday

This week
The Point Loma women's basketball team will welcome in No. 4 California Baptist to close out their 2016 home schedule. This game will mark the end of an era as it will be the final home game for retiring coach Bill Westphal, who has been the leader of the program for the past 17 years. It will also mark one of the most critical games of the season for PLNU as they hope to build their postseason resume against one of the nation's top teams, which they played four times last season and one earlier this year. The game will tipoff at 5:30 p.m.

Senior sendoff
Prior to the game Point Loma will say goodbye to its lone senior, Jordan Ligons, with a ceremony on the court. Ligons has been a four-year letterwinner and three-time PacWest All-Academic selection for the Sea Lions.

Westphal watch
Point Loma head women's basketball coach Bill Westphal sits at 595 career victories. He has already announced his retirement for the end of the season so there is a bit of a race to see if he will reach the 600 victory milestone. PLNU has four regular season games left, in addition to any postseason opportunities to try and get coach Westphal that monumental win.

A look at the Sea Lions
After putting together a nine-game winning streak, PLNU has now dropped its last two contests to fall to 17-7 on the season and 10-6 in the PacWest. Point Loma sits sixth in the PacWest standings, just one game in front of Hawaii Hilo (9-7) for that final spot in the six-team PacWest playoffs, which will be held Mar. 3-5 in Irvine, Calif.

Madison West leads PLNU and ranks seventh in the PacWest with 16.3 points per game. She is fourth in the league in 3-point percentage (.400) and 12th in overall field goal percentage (.426). Alex Brunk is third in the PacWest with 2.4 steals per game. She also ranks 14th in scoring (14.3) and 10th in rebounding (8.5). Roya Rustamzada ranks ninth in the PacWest with 3.4 assists per game. She is averaging 13.2 points and 7.9 rebounds. As a team, PLNU averages 69.0 points per game and shoots .418 percent from the field. Point Loma leads the PacWest in fewest turnovers and fewest fouls per game. PLNU also sits second in free throw percentage and 3-point defense.

A look at the Lancers
California Baptist is the third straight team tied for first place in the PacWest standings the Sea Lions will face. The Lancers are 23-1 on the season and 15-1 in the PacWest. Their only loss came against Azusa Pacific. CBU leads the PacWest in scoring with 85.5 points per game and are outscoring their opponents by 23.4 ppg. Cassidy Mihalko leads the PacWest in scoring with 20.2 ppg. Kamille Diaz is 10th with 15.3 ppg.

Next week
Point Loma will go on the road to Hawaii to face Hawaii Hilo in another critical game on Tuesday, Feb. 23. The Sea Lions will then play Hawaii Pacific on Thursday, Feb. 25 before closing out their trip against Chaminade on Saturday, Feb. 27.
