SAN DIEGO - The match started in singles but the No. 31 Point Loma women's tennis team didn't seem to mind one bit. They jumped on top on Concordia by taking four of six singles matches, including three of the four that when to a decisive third set, then finished them off in doubles for the 6-3 victory (Feb. 24).  
 
PLNU is now 3-2 on the season, while CUI fell to 2-4.
 
Nikki Newell, Regina von Koch and Jen Weissmann each prevailed in the third set of their match. Impressively both Newell and Weissmann did it after dropping the second set. Von Koch had to win two straight sets after dropping her first. Kirsty Mountain was the only Sea Lion to earn a straight set victory in singles. She defeated her opponent at No. 6 6-2 and 6-2.
 
Even as the match turned to doubles with the Sea Lions having a two match lead, things were not easy. CUI cut the match to one with a quick victory at No. 3s. However, Nikki Newell and Regina von Koch stepped up in their No. 1 doubles position to win 8-4 and capture the victory for the Sea Lions.
 
"That was a really tough match against a good Concordia team," said Wheeler. "It was up and down the whole time, but in the end we made a few more shots."
 
Point Loma will return to action on Friday, Feb. 26 when it hosts Western New Mexico at 11:00 a.m.
