SAN DIEGO - Facing their third top 25 opponent in the past week, the No. 29 Point Loma women's tennis team again found themselves in a tightly contested match. However, unlike the previous two matches, the Sea Lions were unable come from behind as they were edged by No. 13 UC San Diego, 5-4. (Feb. 15).

This was the first loss of the year for the Sea Lions (3-1) and it allowed UCSD (4-0) to remain undefeated in 2017.Â

The match began in doubles where UCSD jumped out to a 2-0 lead before
Nikki Newell and
Regina von Koch salvaged a point at No. 1s with an 8-4 win. Both Newell and von Koch would also give the Sea Lions a point in singles play. Newell won in three sets at No. 1s, 4-6, 7-6 and 10-4, while von Koch won in straight sets at No. 2s (6-3, 6-4).
Shelby Groeneveld added another point for PLNU with a three-set victory at No. 3 (0-6, 6-2, 6-3).Â
The Sea Lions' next match which is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 17 against Holy Names is currently up in the air with the threat of rain. Updates coming shortly.Â
