SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma women's tennis will move on to the second round of the PacWest Championships after defeating Stanislaus State, 5-1, on Wednesday, Apr. 19.
 
The Sea Lions (16-7), which are ranked No. 19 in the country and No. 6 in the West, opened the tournament by taking two of three doubles matches. Nicole Camaratta and Ellie Gamble improved to 17-3 as a doubles team this season as they defeated their opponents at No. 3 doubles, 8-3. The birthday girl, Nikki Newell, along with her doubles partner, Regina von Koch, added the second point for the Sea Lions with an 8-4 win at the No. 1 spot. The duo is now 14-9 on the season.
 
The match turned to singles with the Sea Lions needing three wins for the match victory. Camaratta delivered the first singles point with an unblemished sweep at No. 5s, 6-0 and 6-0. Taylor McGowan followed shortly after with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6s to improve her record to 16-7 on the season. Shelby Groeneveld collected the decisive match point with a 7-5, 6-1 win on court 3. This was her 18th win of the season, matching von Koch for the most on the team.
 
The Sea Lions' season will continue on Thursday, Apr. 20 when they face No. 3 seed Academy of Art at 1:30 p.m. This will be the second meeting of the year between the teams. ARTU won the initial contest at home 5-4.
