SURPRISE, Ariz. - In a rematch of one of the most interesting matches of the season, Sonoma State was able to earn a 5-2 victory over the Point Loma women's tennis team in the semifinals of the consolation bracket at the PacWest Championships on Friday, Apr. 21.
 
Sonoma State, which is ranked No. 17 in the country and No. 6 in the west region, improved to 12-7 on the season and will play Azusa Pacific in the consolation match tomorrow. The loss sends PLNU (15-9) into the seventh-place match.
 
Shelby Groeneveld was instrumental in both points for the Sea Lions. She paired with Taylor McGowan to win at No. 2 doubles, 8-3. This allowed Point Loma to go into singles trailing just 2-1.
 
Groeneveld was the first to finish her singles match as she ran through Kaitlyn Haithcock in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. This tied the match for a moment at 2-2. However, this would be the last point the Sea Lions would bank. Sonoma State would win matches on courts 1, 4 and 6 to close out the victory.
 
The match between these two teams tied earlier this season in Rohnert Park was declared a draw after a protest.
 
Point Loma will face Concordia in the seventh place match on Saturday, Apr. 22 at 1:30 p.m. PLNU defeated CUI 9-0 in its regular season finale on Apr. 13.
