SAN DIEGO - Â
Ashlee Watkins and
Abbey Teagle connected on the fastest goal in Point Loma women's soccer history to lead the Sea Lions to a 1-0 victory over Dominican on Thursday, Sept. 28.
Â
It took just 17 seconds for the Sea Lions to put the first and only goal of the match on the board. Right after the opening kickoff, the Sea Lions worked the ball to Teagle along the right sideline. She took her defenders towards the endline and she crossed it to the near post to a cutting Watkins for the score. It was the first career goal for Watkins.

The Turning Point
It is rare to have a turning point occur so early in the match, but Watkins' goal seemed to calm and energize the Sea Lions at the same time. Playing with the 1-0 lead throughout the match, they were more aggressive offensively and defensively, and allowed PLNU to post just its second shutout of the season.

Words from the Hall of Wisdom
On the early goal: "That early goal was huge. There was no magic to that, as far as having anything planned. We got a little lucky on the breakaway and we finished it. Not taking anything at all away from our women, but to get a goal that early is a gift, and it changed the course of the match."
Â
On finishing the match: "We had to close this game down for 89 minutes after scoring early, and we did. They are a tough team and they came at us, but I felt our women played well enough in enough moments of the match to pull it out."
Â
On the defense: "Our defense was tough, and we did make some mistakes, but no earth-shattering ones. I was really proud we maintained that level of grit we needed to finish off that match. I was very proud of them."
