SAN DIEGO - Point Loma headed to Biola today to face the Eagles for the first time as PacWest opponents. After their last match was postponed due to darkness, this was the first full match the Sea Lions played in a week.
Point Loma came out strong in singles play against the Eagles, with freshman
Ben Smit getting the first win in dominating fashion, 6-0, 6-1. Three other Sea Lions would win their singles matches in straight sets. Point Loma took all six of their singles matches, though, and had sealed their victory before doubles play started.
Doubles proved to be a tougher test for PLNU as they lost at both the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
CJ Erion and
Grant Alston would provide the only doubles win, 8-4, at the No. 3 position.

Wheeler's Words
On singles: "We started with singles which we don't do too often. That can be difficult since it is not usually how we start our matches but the guys did a great job. They were able to shift their mindset to how we compete in singles and we were able to take all six matches. So we had clinched the match before we went to doubles."
On doubles: "We had some difficulties at one and two doubles, the teams we played were very good, very solid. There are definitely some things we can improve on in our doubles play, but it can be a bit of a different situation when you have already won the match before going into doubles."
On facing Biola as a new conference opponent: "They are new to the conference, and they just got a new coach who previously coached at APU. I know him well, and have coached against him several times, he is great coach. He has already done well with the players they have there, they play tough and play smart. I expect them to continue to improve and become a tough out for us every time out."
