PLNU STRUGGLES AGAINST #18 TRITONS

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Sea Lions headed up to La Jolla this afternoon to finish a match with UC San Diego that was previously postponed due to darkness. The match began on February 10 but after a rain delay, the match was unable to continue after the completion of doubles play. The Tritons had a 2-1 lead after doubles which they took into the singles competition today.

Brendon Millington and Grant Alston came away with the only point for the Sea Lions in the match with their win at No. 3 doubles. The first two doubles matches, completed almost two weeks ago, were quick wins for UCSD but the tough fought win in the third doubles match hoped to give the Sea Lions momentum heading into singles. A malfunction with the lights at UCSD caused the match to be postponed and the team was overmatched when singles play resumed today.

Both Thomas Dafcik and Brendon Millington, playing at No. 1 and 2 singles respectively, faced tough matchups against ranked opponents. Dafcik went down 6-2, 6-1 against the 21st ranked singles player and Millington fell 6-4, 6-0 to the 39th ranked player. The Sea Lions did have some close matches with CJ Erion pushing his match to three sets, and both Ben Smit and Jack Alston dropped sets 7-6. Point Loma dropped all six of their singles matches and fell in the match 8-1.

Wheeler's Words
On the match overall: "We originally began this match almost two weeks ago. We finished doubles play that day and we won one of those matches and were down 2-1 coming into today. Overall, it was a tough day today, losing all six singles matches but we did have some matches where we played tough."

On being able to play tough on the road: "Playing away in tennis, or in any sport, is tough but in tennis the court surfaces can be very different from one place to another. We definitely struggled with that today, but we still gained some great experience facing tough competition. The top two players for UCSD are nationally ranked and have been in the program for a while now, I expected that our top guys could play up to their level and could even win their matches but today it just didn't go our way."
