SAN DIEGO - Men's soccer head coach,
Phil Wolf, has officially announced his recruiting class for the 2018 season. His team is coming off of a historic season that included a 16-game unbeaten streak and hopes that this class can help continue that success. Wolf brought in six transfers and eight freshman and is excited about the potential of the incoming class.
"We are very excited about the incoming class of footballers," Wolf stated. "Each of them are very accomplished players and will increase the overall quality and depth in the team. This is a group that will help us to continue to improve as a program in our ultimate goal to build an elite program at Point Loma. We cannot wait to get the opportunity to train each of these players come the fall."
Freshmen
Matthew Abangan, 5-11, 150 lbs, Fr., D/MF, Glendora, Calif. (Glendora HS)
Abangan is joining the Sea Lions out of Glendora High School where he was a three-year letter-winner who helped the team to back-to-back league championships. He was named his team's offensive MVP in 2018 and earned first-team All-League honors as a junior and senior. He played for the Manchester United FC club team and his team traveled to Mexico to play in the Copa Chivas tournament.
Wolf's thoughts: "I had the opportunity to coach Matthew as a young 10 year old player years ago while I was coaching at APU. Matthew has turned into an excellent player who has fantastic football instinct. If you can adjust to the physical demands of college soccer, we believe he will have an excellent career here at Point Loma."
Teague Anderson, 6-0, 165 lbs, Fr., MF, Corona, Calif. (Temescal Canyon HS)
Anderson is joining the Sea Lions out of Temescal Canyon High School where he scored 17 goals and had six assists in his senior season. He earned first team All-League honors in 2016 and 2018, and earned first team CIF honors in 2018. In addition to his on-field honors, he was named to his league's All-Academic team three years in a row. He played his club ball with Temecula Quails FC.
Wolf's thoughts: "Teague was first identified at our soccer camp and we are very pleased that he has decided to stay close to home for the next four years. Like most of this class, we feel like Teague can play in multiple positions. He is a fantastic athlete that will increase our athletic ability overall. We believe that Teague's adjustment to our team and style of play will be seamless and we think he will be in our rotation right away. Teague is a true two way player, who is as accomplished an attacker as he is a defender."
Corey Lundeen, 5-8, 145 lbs, Fr., MF, Arroyo Grande, Calif. (Arroyo Grande HS)
Lundeen comes to Point Loma out of Arroyo Grande High School where he earned All-State honors as a senior. He played with the Eagles Soccer Club out of San Luis Obispo scoring eight goals and dishing 13 assists in the 2017 season. He also spent a year in Spain where he played for the Kaptiva Soccer Academy and was named the MVP of their U19 team.
Wolf's thoughts: "Corey comes to us through our camp and we are excited that he has chosen to attend Point Loma over the next four years. One of the purest footballers in the group, Corey will face an adjustment to the physical challenges of the college game, but we believe his football IQ and fantastic technique will overcome any physical challenges he will face. We anticipate him fitting nicely into a #10 role in the central midfield."
Timmy Mooring, 6-0, 173 lbs, Fr., D, San Diego, Calif. (Point Loma HS)
Mooring joins the Sea Lions out of Point Loma High School and the San Diego Surf club team.
Wolf's thoughts: "As the son of a long time Point Loma biology professor, we are excited that Timmy has decided to stay close to home for the next four years. Like many of the players in this class, Timmy has experience playing in multiple positions and has had an outstanding high school and club career. Timmy possesses a good technical and tactical foundation and once he adjusts to the speed of the college game, we believe that he will contribute to our success."
Jack Murphy, 6-1, 145 lbs, Fr., D, San Diego, Calif. (Mira Mesa HS)
Murphy joins the Sea Lions out of Mira Mesa High school where he earned first team All-League honors. He played his club ball with San Diego Surf.
Wolf's thoughts: "Jack has been on my radar for some time and we are incredibly excited that Jack has decided to call Point Loma home for the next four years. A player that can feature in multiple positions, Jack brings a passion and competitive spirit that we believe will help push us to the next level. He reminds me of Jake Eisenberg who had a wonderful first year at Point Loma. There is not much that Jack cannot do on the football pitch and we are excited to find out where his greatest impact will be."
Parker Scalzo, 6-4, 170 lbs, Fr., F, Murrieta, Calif. (Murrieta Valley HS)
Scalzo joins the Sea Lions out of Murrieta Valley High School and the Murrieta Surf club team. He received All-League honors in 2017 and 2018 and was named his team's offensive MVP.
Wolf's thoughts: "Parker comes to us flying under the radar a bit but we are really excited about the potential that Parker brings. This 6'3" striker has all the qualities to score goals at this level if he can quickly adjust to our style of play and the physical demands that college soccer can bring. He has the technical quality and first touch to hold up play while also possesses the speed to stretch defenses. That is a dangerous combination for any striker. We cannot wait to train him."
Barret Wolf, 6-0, 175 lbs, Fr., D, San Diego, Calif. (Point Loma HS)
Wolf joins the Sea Lions out of Point Loma High School where he earned All-CIF second team honors. He played his club ball with San Diego Surf.
Wolf's thoughts: "We are excited that Barrett has decided to attend Point Loma over the next four years. A late bloomer, Barrett had an outstanding senior season at Point Loma High School where he finished as his team's leading scorer and was named 2nd team All-CIF. He led his team in scoring as Point Loma High School won their 4th CIF San Diego section championship in program history. We are counting on the fact that Barrett will continue to improve and we are looking forward to his impact in our program."
Andrew Kleszewski, 5-9, 155 lbs, MF, Oceanside, Calif. (Cathedral Catholic HS)
Kleszewski comes to Point Loma out of Cathedral Catholic High School and the San Diego Surf club team. He earned the Western League Player of the Year and CIF First Team honors in 2018.
Wolf's thoughts: "Andrew is a wonderful footballer that I have been able to see several times over the past year both with Surf SC and with Cathedral Catholic. He excels in several positions but it is his attacking ability that has caught my eye. We believe he can feature on the wing or in the central midfield for us and will give us a much needed boost in the attack. He can run at players with the football and will be perhaps the most two footed player on the team. We are excited about what Andrew brings on and off the field and look forward to our first day of training together."
Transfers
Five transfers highlight the class, Connor McEwen, Pascal Rodriguez, Tanner Sartwell, Ian Thomas, and Kyle Hoh. Each of these players are expected to bring a wealth of experience and talent to the Sea Lions.
Kyle Hoh, 5-11, 150 lbs, Jr., D, San Diego, Calif. (Point Loma HS)
Hoh is an incoming transfer, coming to Point Loma from PacWest opponent Dominican (CA), who is a local player out of Point Loma High School and Albion SC. He received all-league honors in 2015 and 2016. As a freshman at Dominican (CA) University he started 17 games for the Penguins and registered 1437 minutes of playing time.
Wolf's thoughts: "A local product out of Point Loma high school, Kyle joins our program from conference rival Dominican University where he played his freshman year. Kyle is a multi dimensional footballer who can play in either fullback position and can even feature in the central midfield. He will increase our depth in the team and we anticipate him getting into our squad rotation policy right away."
Connor McEwen, Cuyamaca Community College
Wolf's thoughts: "We are excited that Connor will join us for the 2018 season as he will serve as a back up goalkeeper to our first ever All-American
Wiktor Lasota. An already proven keeper at the junior college level, Connor was a standout goalkeeper at Cuyamaca. We look forward to his impact in our program."
Pascal Rodriguez, Chaparral High School
Wolf's thoughts: "Pascal transferred to us at the break and he has been a wonderful addition to the team. Like his older brother Matias, he is a fantastic player and will give us a much needed dimension in the central midfield. He is unique blend of toughness and work rate combined together with quality passing and tactical awareness. We believe that he will add much needed steel to our central midfield."
Tanner Sartwell, West Valley Community College
Wolf's thoughts: "Tanner comes to us from West Valley Community College in Northern California where he was part of a successful junior college program. Although he is coming off of a serious ACL injury, Tanner showed signs of his return to full fitness this spring. We believe that he can feature wide left in the midfield and can play at the back in either fullback position. Tanner is a great kid and we look forward to him getting up to full fitness by August."
Ian Thomas, Whitworth College/Regis University
Wolf's thoughts: "Ian transferred to us at the break and will redshirt his first year at Point Loma. He is a solid player that will adjust to the level over time. He is an excellent culture fit and understands what we are trying to build at Point Loma."
