SAN DIEGO – The 2021 PacWest Women's Tennis Championships will be held in Surprise, Ariz. on April 21-24, where 12 women's tennis teams will be competing for the PacWest Championships. The winner will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA West Super-Regional.
Hawai'i Pacific enters the tournament as the two-time defending champions led by the No. 16 and No. 20 individual players in the country, Marleen Tilgner and Elodie Busson.
Point Loma enters the tournament as the No. 5 seed and will play the No. 12 seed Chaminade on Wednesday, April 21.
Point Loma has dropped four straight matches headed into the PacWest Championships, but everyone knows once you're into the postseason, anything can happen. The Sea Lions have defeated two of three Division I opponents they have faced this year and have gone toe-to-toe with two nationally-ranked teams, Concordia and Hawai'i Pacific dropping those matches 4-3.
Point Loma's doubles teams have combined to go 13-20 this season.
Gabi Armas and
Angelique Friedrich sit at 4-7 in the No. 1 positions with wins over two Division I opponents in Cal State Fullerton and Portland. They also defeated the top doubles pair in their last match against No. 7 Hawai'i Pacific.
Thelma Sepulveda and
Rachel Whittington are 6-4 on the season in doubles play, playing in the No. 3 positon. The duo has created great chemistry and has won four of their last six matches, with two of the wins being against nationally-ranked teams.
The Sea Lions' have combined for a 26-31 record in singles play.
Gabi Armas who has split time in the No. 5 and No. 6 position is 6-4 and has won five of her last nine matches.
Samantha Neilson has been great in the No. 6 position going 4-2 and coming up with some key match victories for the Sea Lions.
Amanda Letzring returned to the lineup last match after recovering from a foot injury. The freshmen won her first two collegiate matches, including capturing the clinching point against PacWest foe Biola.
Angelique Friedrich has not had the season she had hoped for but she can be lightning in a bottle at any moment. Playing atop the Sea Lions roster Friedrich has faced three nationally-ranked singles players and the competition has prepared her for a strong run in the PacWest Championships.
Faith Pearson is another Sea Lion who has had a strong season. Pearson who has gone back and forth between the No. 3 and No.4 positions is currently 4-5 on the season but has won back-to-back matchups heading into the postseason.
Point Loma will open up the PacWest Championships on Wednesday, April 21 at 9 a.m. when they face off against Chaminade in the first round.
