(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Men's Basketball has signed a pair of talented guards in the Class of 2023, Tyce Paulsen and Jaden Matingou, Head Coach
Matt Logie announced.
Paulsen, a 6-foot-4 guard from University Place, Washington, is PLNU's highest-rated recruit in its NCAA era. Matingou, a 6-foot-3 guard, is a local talent and CIF champion from San Diego.
"As a staff, we are thrilled to add two young men in Jaden and Tyce who will not only impact our program on the court immediately, but will have a chance to continue to invest into and grow our culture here at PLNU over the next four years," Head Coach
Matt Logie said.
Paulsen, a 1,000-point scorer at Curtis High School, is rated by 247 Sports as a three-star recruit, while being ranked sixth in the state of Washington and 46th among shooting guards nationwide in the class of 2023.
"Tyce has great size, length and versatility as a guard," Logie said. "He can handle the basketball, shoot with range and make plays for others, all while defending at a high level as well."
Paulsen is a two-time First Team All-SPSL 4A selection, while also winning the 2022 state championship and SPSL 4A MVP award.
"Tyce is the latest in a long line of talented players from Washington state to find their way to the Point and we are thrilled to add Tyce to our basketball family," Logie said. "Tyce is another winner who helped Curtis HS to the 2022 Washington 4A State Championship under head coach Tim Kelly.
"He went on to have great success on the Under Armour club circuit playing with Coach Carl Howell and Team Stuck, and has competed against some of the best players in the country while earning his regional and national rankings as a prospect."
Matingou won't have to go far for college, as he currently attends St. Augustine High School in San Diego, with whom he won the CIF Open Division championship.
"Jaden's athleticism, and defensive prowess is extremely unique and catches your eye immediately," Logie said. "However, it was his budding skill set, unselfishness and improved offensive ability that really excited us about his ceiling here at Point Loma. Jaden is another terrific student and mission fit for our university and we are thrilled that he will be a Sea Lion."
Matingou has also been awarded several individual accolades, being a three-time All-Western League selection, two-time All-CIF Team honoree and an All-State Third Team Honorable Mention.
"Jaden is a young man we identified here locally very early on in the process and only grew to love more and more as we built a relationship," Logie said. "As a player, Jaden is a winner that does a little bit of everything to help you win. He has been extremely well-coached and developed at both St. Augustine HS under Coach Mike Haupt as well as the Gamepoint club program under Charlie Mercado and his staff."
Logie said that he is excited to add the Paulsen and Matingou to the mix of returners the team will have next fall.
"Both Jaden and Tyce had multiple Division I opportunities, yet identified that Point Loma could provide everything they were looking for at the college level in terms of competing for championships, developing into the best players they can become, getting a top-flight education and being surrounded by people who really care about them," Logie said.
