5/3/2023 12:08:00 AM

Box Score (HONOLULU) For the second-straight year, PLNU Women's Tennis traveled to take on Hawaii Pacific in the NCAA West Regional. And for the second-straight time, HPU ended PLNU's season in the Aloha State by a narrow 4-2 margin.

The Sea Lions gave the top-seeded Sharks everything they could, with the slimmest of margins separating the two sides.

HPU won the doubles point in a tiebreak, while Point Loma led the one singles match left unfinished when the hosts clinched the match victory.

"The ladies had a great effort this afternoon and evening against a tough HPU team," Head Coach Curt Wheeler said. "They did a tremendous job of staying focused after the long rain delay."

Angelique Friedrich and Joelle Lanz didn't lose a single game in doubles, with their 6-0 victory at No. 2 leading to a winner-take-all doubles matchup on the No. 3 court.

Just like in the PacWest semifinal matchup between these two teams, the doubles point came down to the wire at No. 3 with Rachel Whittington and Amanda Letzring forcing a tiebreak. However, HPU gained the upper hand in that tiebreak to take a crucial 1-0 lead in the match.

Thelma Sepulveda (5-2) and Whittington (1-6, 6-1) both claimed singles victories at No. 4 and 6 respectively when their opponents retired, earning Point Loma's two points.

Amanda Letzring was leading her No. 5 singles match (6-4, 0-4) when the match was called.

Lanz was down a break in the second set at No. 2, trailing 0-3, but fought back to tie the set at 3-3 and 4-4 before HPU managed to clinch he overall match.

Point Loma (16-9 overall) finishes another historic season after reaching its second-ever and second-consecutive NCAA West Regional after finishing a program-best third place at the PacWest Championships.

"The women's team had a great season with a lot to be proud of," Wheeler said.
