(SAN DIEGO) Interim Athletic Director Jordan Courneya had his interim title removed and has been hired as Point Loma Athletic Director, effective immediately.
"Jordan has effectively led the Athletics leadership team, which has elevated the competitive excellence of our athletic programs while strengthening the character and purpose that reflect who we are as a university," said PLNU President Dr. Kerry Fulcher. "I'm confident that under his leadership, PLNU Athletics will continue to thrive on and off the field as a meaningful extension of our mission to shape students who live, lead, and serve with integrity and faith."
Courneya, who was initially promoted to Interim Athletic Director in July 2024, led PLNU to one of its most successful seasons in department history this year.
For the first time ever, Point Loma won the PacWest's Bob Hogue Commissioner's Cup, awarded to the conference athletic department with the best overall performance in the PacWest based on average conference finish.
The Sea Lions won PacWest championships in five of their 11 sports, while adding three conference tournament titles. Those eight PacWest trophies won set a new department record, as did 10 Point Loma teams competing in the NCAA postseason.
"I am deeply humbled and excited to step into the role of Athletic Director at Point Loma Nazarene University," Courneya said. "Over the past 20 years, I have witnessed the remarkable growth and success of our athletics program, and I am committed to leading us into a bright and ambitious future. I want to thank President Fulcher for his trust and confidence in my leadership."
2024-25 was Courneya's 20th year at Point Loma, having spent 14 years on the men's basketball coaching staff and the past six in athletic administration. Prior to this past year as Interim Athletic Director, Courneya served as Associate Athletic Director for Event Operations.
"I also want to honor the extraordinary legacies of Ethan Hamilton and Carroll Land, whose combined 57 years of leadership have set a powerful standard of excellence that continues to inspire us all," Courneya said. "I look forward to building on this foundation, championing our student-athletes, and ensuring that PLNU remains a place of opportunity, faith and lasting impact."
While leading Event Operations, Courneya was the point person at all home athletic events, managing the pregame setup, hospitality of teams, gameday staff, ticketing, live stream, concessions and postgame teardown. He also regularly collaborated with Campus Facilities and IT to improve athletic facilities and technology.
Notable completed projects of his include upgrading the seating in Golden Gym, the soccer & track scoreboard, the athletics outdoor weight space for student-athletes and the outfield wall padding and graphics in Carroll B. Land Stadium.
He has also enhanced the live streaming of home athletic events and in collaboration with IT, helped upgrade the WiFi network in Golden Gym.
Most recently, Courneya was heavily involved with the PLNU Soccer Field renovation project, which was completed last fall.
Prior to working in athletic administration, Courneya spent 14 years coaching men's basketball, including five as associate head coach. During that time, PLNU made two trips to the NAIA Tournament and a pair of NCAA West Regional appearances.
In 2007-08, Point Loma advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NAIA Tournament and won a NAIA Tournament game for the first time in over 50 years.
During its transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II, PLNU won the NCCAA national title in 2013-14.
Then in 2018-19, Point Loma finished as NCAA DII national runner-up after winning the PacWest regular season, PacWest Tournament and West Region titles.
