PLNU Edged by Vanguard

Penalties and 1-0 loss in final home game

BOX SCORE

SAN DIEGO - Seven cards were handed out and 21 fouls were called on the final regular season game of the year for Point Loma Nazarene on Wednesday. But it was a Vanguard goal in the 71st minute of play that ruined Senior Day as the Sea Lions fell 1-0.

The loss dropped PLNU to 5-9 overall. The team's 2-6 GSAC record has the Sea Lions tenth in the conference standings and on the outside looking in as far as the playoffs go. Only two games are left in the regular season: Saturday's 7 pm tilt at Biola and the following Saturday at Fresno Pacific. Those squads are currently fifth and fourth, respectively, in the standings.

Wednesday's match was scoreless through the first half despite 10 combined shots, six of which were on goal. Finally, in the 71st minute, and just seconds after the Sea Lions lost a player due to a red card, VU's William Pellow took a cross from Kyle O'Brien and sent the ball into the Point Loma net.

The visiting Lions also had to play with 10 instead of 11 when one of their own was handed a red card. PLNU pressed for the remaining 18 minutes but were not able to finish.

Vanguard improved to 7-7, 6-1 GSAC with the win. The Lions controlled the game's tempo for the most part, outshooting PLNU 12-7, 6-2 on goal. Sea Lion freshman keeper Carter Phillips had five saves while his counterpart, Trevor Herrera, registered two saves.
