Men's Soccer vs. CSU San Marcos

Last-Minute Goals Sink Sea Lions

After a scoreless second half, the Sea Lions suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to Cal State San Marcos Tuesday. Both of the visiting Cougar goals came as the clock was winding down. The loss puts PLNU at 1-3 on the season while the Cougars improve to 4-3 overall.

The Sea Lions got the scoring started 30 minutes into the first half when Austin Fares converted a corner kick from Jon Fielding into a goal. Fares' goal was the only shot on net for Point Loma. They held the lead until the last minute of the half.

With green and gold keeper Eric Leboffe at the top of the box, looking for an interference call, Cougars forward Casey Wootan lobbed a ball into the left corner of the net.

The physical second half, in which San Marcos defender Jordan Shadeed was given a yellow card, yielded no goals, pushing it into overtime.

With 1:23 on the clock, an assist from Martin Suarez, Max Blumenshine ended the sudden death overtime for the Cougars victory.

For the Sea Lions, Francois Furlan had three shots and Erik Melendez had two, none of which were on goal.

CSU San Marcos managed nine shots on goal with 11 total shots. Blumenshine took three and Kane Leonard had two.

The PLNU soccer arsenal hits the road Saturday to take on Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
