PLNU and Vanguard played to a scoreless tie at VUSC Soccer Field Tuesday afternoon. The Sea Lions now stand at 3-9-1 overall, 2-5-1 in Golden State Athletic Conference play while the Lions are 6-5-3, 3-2-2 GSAC.
The tie, along with CBU's 4-0 win over Hope International, drops PLNU into ninth place in the conference standings, one slot removed from a playoff spot. CBU and PLNU have the same GSAC record but the Sea Lions lost to the Lancers earlier in the year.
The opening half was pretty quiet offensively. Only five total shots were attempted, four from the home team Lions. PLNU forward Francois Furlan was given a red card midway into the second half, forcing the Sea Lions to play down a man from the 68th minute on. That advantage helped Vanguard open things up offensively. The Lions tried eight shots in the period, twice as many as PLNU.
Sea Lion netminder Eric Laboffe made two saves in each half and his counterpart, Trevor Herrera, turned back two shots in the second to force overtime. PLNU did not try a shot in the either overtime. The Lions, meanwhile, went for the win by sending four total shots Laboffe's way in the 20 minutes of bonus play, but the only one that was on target was stopped.
Vanguard ended up attempting 16 shots to five from PLNU with a 5-2 shots on goal advantage. Jon Fielding took two of five Sea Lion attempts, one of which was on target. Austin Mobley took the other shot on goal for PLNU.
Thirty total fouls were called in the match, 19 on the Sea Lions. VU was a bit too aggressive and was flagged for being offsides a whopping 12 times.
PLNU will be home this Saturday to take on the Biola Eagles. The GSAC match starts at 1:00 pm. Two Sea Lions starters, Furlan (red card) and Fielding (who was given his fifth yellow card of the year Tuesday), will be ineligible to participate.
