Turnovers Haunt PLNU in Loss to Biola

The Sea Lions shot over 50 percent and made 11-16 three pointers but turned the ball over 23 times in a 74-63 loss at Biola Tuesday. PLNU falls to 1-6 on the season, 0-3 in conference while the No. 5-ranked Eagles improved to 7-0, 3-0 GSAC.

The GSAC-tilt was close in many statistical categories. In rebounds, the Eagles grabbed 30 to PLNU's 28. The Sea Lions shot 51.2 percent and the Eagles averaged 52.5 percent. But 23 PLNU turnovers and 15 BU blocks eventually turned the tide in favor of the Eagles.

Biola controlled the game early, with eight unanswered points. Nearly two minutes passed before Nate Weelden put the Sea Lions on the board. The Sea Lions gradually got themselves back in contention, as a three-point opportunity from Rhett Beal brought PLNU within one point at halftime.

The Eagles started the second with four unanswered points, but 2:15 into the half a three pointer from PLNU's Greg Murray tied it up 40-40. A few minutes later Murray drained another three to give the Sea Lions their biggest lead of the game at 49-46. It was the last time PLNU scored for a while, however.

BU went on 14-0 run, keeping Point Loma scoreless for more than four minutes, before Van Weelden's bucket made it 60-51. The Eagles led by as much as 14 before the contest was over, but the Sea Lions closed the gap to 11 by the buzzer.

Murray led the PLNU offense with 20 points, followed by Van Weelden with 17 and James Hancock and Rhett Beal with nine apiece.

Biola had four players hit double digits. Rocky Hampton led with 18 and Marlon King, Nate Rakestraw and Andrew Schroeder each had 12. King had six blocks and Rakestraw had five.

Men's hoops has the weekend off but will take a break from finals to host Georgia team Berry College in Golden Gymnasium Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
