Men's Basketball vs. Westmont

PLNU Comes Up Short in 2OT Thriller

PLNU came out on the wrong end of a double-overtime thriller Saturday night, falling to Westmont 69-66 in Golden Gym. The Sea Lions (5-11, 2-6) and Warriors (12-4, 4-3) engaged in a defensive battle all night, but it was the Warriors who finally claimed the marathon win.

The Sea Lions had their chances for an upset over No. 22-ranked WC, especially in the first overtime but missed free throws and a turnover on the final possession allowed the game to advance into a second overtime.

In the second OT, Westmont took the lead with a three-pointer by Matt LeDuc that made the score 58-57. The Warriors began to pull ahead, then capitalized on their free-throw opportunities. Leading 67-63 with 11 seconds left, the game appeared to be over, but Rhett Beal gave the Sea Lions new life as it took him three seconds to take the ball down and quickly drain a three with eight seconds to go.

The Warriors hit two free throws to make the score 69-66, giving the Sea Lions one final chance with just under five seconds remaining. Unfortunately the Sea Lions could not get a quality shot off, as time expired.

Beal led the team with a game-high 24 points. His biggest shot of the night came late in the second half as he tied the game with a three from the corner after stealing the ball. This capped a Sea Lion comeback that saw them come back from being down 50-44 with 2:40 to play. James Hancock made a circus shot while being fouled, and converted on a three-point play prior to Beal's three.

Westmont had a chance to win it in regulation, but point guard Chris Jackson had his shot blocked by Nate Van Weelden. Jackson got his own rebound, but Van Weelden muscled the ball away from him to send the game to overtime.

PLNU then had a chance to win at the end of the first overtime, with the score tied at 55. They had seven seconds to score, but a pass was knocked away by the Warriors and the team was unable to get a good look.

James Hancock finished with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Todd Campbell added 10 points.

Evan Haines was a force for the Warriors all night, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Most of his damage was done on the defensive end though, as he finished with eight blocks and altered many more shots. Andrew Schmalbach added 15 points and Jackson finished with 10 points and five assists.

The Sea Lions are back in action on Tuesday, looking to break a three-game losing streak when they host Cal Baptist (11-6, 4-3).
