Sea Lions Post Big Win Over CBU

The NAIA second-ranked Sea Lions posted a 35-point win over visiting California Baptist Wednesday night in Golden Gym. The 95-60 triumph pushed PLNU to 17-1 overall, 8-1 against Golden State Athletic Conference foes.

The conference tilt was delayed one day due to a power outage Tuesday in Golden Gym. When the action started on Wednesday it was PLNU charged up and ready to play. The Sea Lions scored the first nine points of the contest and were quickly up 16-3 before CBU regrouped. The Lancers went on a 17-4 run, though, to cut the deficit to just five points.

PLNU scored 22 of the next 27 points and held a 19-point advantage with just over a minute left in the opening half. The Sea Lions went into intermission ahead 44-27.

The home team lead swelled to 22 seven minutes into the second half and reached 30 with just over four to play and 40 at the 2:32 mark. At that point all that was in question was whether the Sea Lions would top triple-digits but the Green and Gold came up five points short.

Colleen Planeta paced the PLNU offense with 26 points on a 10-15 shooting night from the field and a 5-6 effort from the stripe. The senior forward also blocked six shots. Four other Sea Lions went into double-figures as well: Amanda Franz (15), Kaitlyn Trotter (12), PJ Hanson (10) and Liah Ector (10).

Hanson grabbed a team-best eight rebounds with Ector dishing out six assists. PLNU coach Bill Westphal played his entire bench in the game and had 11 players score.

The Lancers (10-8, 3-5) were led by 14 points from Kendra Morris. Megan Bradford scored 12 points with Heather Couzens adding 11 points and eight boards.

Point Loma shot 60 percent by making 37-62 attempts from the field. The Sea Lions were good on 7-15 treys and 14-17 from the free throw line. CBU, meanwhile, shot 38 percent (21-55).

The next tilt for the first-place Sea Lions is this Saturday at No. 23-ranked The Master's College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
